I'm curious about what you use to detail your bike. The bike I own is a '82 Yamaha Maxim 650. Choose any word like rusty, dirty, chips, dents, faded, oxidation, etc....

That word would describe her.

But I have still spent many hours (not this year) getting it to shine the best it can. Some products seemed to do a great job at certain things. Some stuff I used was crap.

So let's see if we can come up with the best and the worst stuff out there that supposed to make our bikes look great.

Spray it with a hose, then a bucket with dish washing liquid and water and a washing mitt. Rinse it with the hose, wipe dry, and polish with pledge. I have a closet in the shop that is full of different polish's but never use them.
And where we we buy WURTH products Mark? Hmmmmmm :)

There is a product I really like for restoring rusty and oxidized metal. It's called Colonel Brassy. Not something you want to use for anything that is already shiny but works great to get metal ready to shine.
Its not a body lotion either Jeff! Your stuck with that rust!

Most of the time for a light wash I use Turtle Wax ICE detailer or Mothers Detailer.. for a Heavy wash I use car wash soap or Simple Green

I want resurrect this topic for a moment.

I wash my bike like most of you do. BUT when I want it really clean and to shine like a Sapphire. I take it James. James is this dude who works at Berube's Auto center in Lewiston. I have never seen anyone do the level of work he does on cleaning cars and bikes. The guy has multiple tooth brushes and some crazy 2000 dollar steam detailing rig. If you need your bike to be "Bike Show" clean and detailed. I would talk to James about it.

That's good to know Chris, I live in that area and I don't know anyone I would trust to detail my bike.....other than myself of course, but I don't always have time to "get crazy" with it. I usually wash well with good soap, then blow dry with leaf blower.........detail after it dries.

Haven't posted here for quite a while, just lurking from time to time. This thread caught my eye as I like to have a nice looking ride but I'm too lazy to spend hours on her. Lots of good ideas here. I particularly like Bike Brite as it doesn't require lots of scrubbing and removes oil and grease ( works good as engine cleaner on the car too as it is gentle on paint). Other than that the only two things I didn't see mentioned was Plexus (most bike shops or J&P carry it) for the windshield, goggles and face shield, also shop goggles as it repels dust and the one thing I always carry for quick clean up, Pledge. That's right good old Pledge. Best thing I've found for paint, chrome and even plexiglass. Cheaper than the cycle brand aerosol cleaners and works as good.

You and I are cut from the same cloth. Mine has 33,500 miles and still looks new. Check out the Blaster Side Kick. A hand held jet drier. Saves time. Doesn't put compressor oil on your bike and safer than a leaf blower. Around $100. Worth it.

Im a big clean freak when It comes to my bike

I clean it before I ride ( whipe all surfaces down with honda polish, check chain, tighten all fairing bolts as well while im doing this )

1. Once a week she gets a nice HOT soapy wash with dawn and hot water from the tap inside ( buckets thrown on the bike and washed and more buckets thrown on it to wrinse it )
2. Then Clean with honda polish ( incase theres any dust on it )
3. Then I put coat after coat after coat of Mcguires Carnoba wax... usually 3-5 on the tank, 3-5 on the front and 5-10 on the under tail ( gets lots of crap on it )
4. With this weekly cleaning I also clean the chain ( havent had to use kerosene yet but will if i need to ) then i take the bike for a quick ride, come back put it on the rear stand and spray the chain down with chain wax
5. Clean rims with honda polish, then use a silicone spray, spray it on, let it sit for about 40 seconds, then start the bike and put in gear and hold the rag on the rim and watch it shine :-)
6. Whipe down all rubber parts, cable covers, any black plastic with more honda polish.
7. After this is all done. I tighten all fairing bolts once a week as well as almost every ride

Am I to anal about my bike?? 1800 miles on it and nobody would know it didnt just come off the show room floor.
