180mm is the width.

50 & 55 are the percentages of the width (profile).

On my Boulevard C-90, when i changed over to Dunlops from Brickstones I went from 180/80 to 180/70.

No issues with two sets of them.

I'm not sure what your stock size is but it looks like it might be a 160/70-17. If so, it has a 112 mm sidewall height using the percentage as DR noted. In order to get the same (or close) height with a 180 you'd have to go with a 60 series which would give you a height of 108 mm. Slightly shorter sidewall than 160/70. Now, will the added width fit within the swing arm and fender? That, I don't know. Just a note that the 55 and 50 series tires you asked about would be 99 mm and 90 mm respectively.

Note: Increaseing or decreasing the sidewall height from OEM will create and error in your speedo\odometer.

In my case it was done to correct and inherent error .

I was thinking that when I read your post but failed to go down that road. You can calculate the difference. Stock tire/wheel height for the 160/70-17 is about 656 mm and a 180/60-17 is about 648. So that puts the 180/60-17 at 99% the height of the 160/70-17 which will make a 1% difference in your speedometer and odometer. In this case it was minimal but in the days of adding large tires to my pickup, it made a big difference. My speedometer could be as much as 10% off which meant I was really going 55 when my speedometer read 50.
