I just received word from Mark Elliot that a new Helmet Bill LD 351 has been introduce with language requiring that  licensed Motorcyclist with 10yrs or less will be required to wear a helmet. I've already contacted my State Representative and He'll be looking into this when He returns to the Statehouse on Monday.

Not surprising givin everything else they have been trying to get through lately.  This is all that exists about the bill right now:

"An Act Concerning Motorcycle Safety"
Sponsored by Representative Paulette Beaudoin

C. An operator of a motorcycle, operating under a learner's permit or within one year10 years of successfully completing a driving test; and

SUMMARY

This bill requires an operator of a motorcycle who has held a license endorsed for the operation of a motorcycle for less than 10 years to wear protective headgear.

It looks to me to be very loose language (isn't clear if it is necessary for the license to be a Maine license for 10 years) and doesn't mention a DOT sticker on the protective headgear.

At least it didn't require that EPA stickers are to be posted on helmets.... Maybe we should all strap whoopie pies to our heads so the legislature doesn't have to waist another $2500 to hear this helmet bill.

.

Why is this legislation being put forth?

It just seems dumb and a waste of money. Is this pay back for something? Or is this rep nuts?

Can someone explain the reasoning behind this legislation? It make no sense to me.

These assholes just hate to see anyone having fun, period. Nothing more to it. No concern for your safety. Just to fuck with us.

Okay RB, it seems as you say.

But, this is just stupid and arrogant if it some kind of a pay back. Paulette Beaudoin needs to realize that we don't forget and we VOTE. She has only been in office since 2006. Kind of a newbie imo.

Make sure you all contact your reps as well as the sponsors of this bill. Be respectful and ask questions to make sure they are listening and hearing you. Encourage them to ask you questions as well.

Assholes, stupid, dumb,nuts????

I'm not sure why all the name calling.

They have a different opinion then you.

Though name calling might make you feel better it never helps whatever cause you're fighting for.

You need to do reasearch and back up your opinion with facts as to why this is a bad bill.

Otherwise it's just name calling.

Before I say anything I should add this disclaimer. I represent myself and Maine Biker Network. I do not represent UBM. I do not represent MMPAC. Any information found in our Motorcycle Rights section is a Maine Biker Network service and should not be considered as coming from UBM or MMPAC.

Havimg said that, I appreciate everyone's involvement. iI agree that name calling is counter productive but would rather have it here instead of in letters sent to the powers that be. We as a motorcycle community shod be involved and contacting those that vote on these bills.

The goal of Maine Biker Network is to inform the riding community AND assist with contacting the right individuals. You will see more on this bill in the Rights section soon.

Unfortunately it looks like a busy year so please help us get more people involved and in formed
So much for bills coming up that we don't know about, lol. If anyone knows about upcoming bills, everyone knows, because we share info. Makes me wonder about the need for some of these folks who think they are the only one's in the loop.

I called the legislation....uh, bad words. Not the state rep. And I did it here not there. While my opinion differs from Rep. Beaudoin, my opinion won't affect every rider in Maine nor cost taxpayers $2500.00.

Yes I will be writing my legislators and no, I won't be using disrespectful language.

I have a question about this bill. If for some reason this passes (let hope it doesn't) what about the passenger? Will the passenger have to wear a helmet or will it only be the driver???
Todd, I have to work at the State House tomorrow and will see what else I can find out about the bill and let you know asap.

I thought this was a place motorcyclists could speak freely. Seems the PC police are everywhere. Hard as may be for you to believe, if I was conversing directly with the person responsible for this nonsense, I would be able to use a little tact.

Just as I am doing with you.
